Tetra

Tetra are the family of fish most commonly used in community aquariums. There are far more species of tetra commonly kept in aquariums than we have listed here, but these are our most popular and hardiest. Most are small, but we do have a few larger species that we regularly keep.

While most of these are small fish, don't let their size fool you. They can have a very dramatic impact on a tank in greater numbers. Most stick close together and the coordinated movement draws the eye. In large tanks, the effect is phenomenal.

Schooling: All tetra are schooling fish, which means that they do best in groups of 6 or more, but they are honestly best kept as a group of 12+. Thus, even though they are small on their own, your tank needs to be big enough to accommodate a group of them.

Compatibility: Because this family is so diverse, it is hard to give a general rule for tankmates. Some tetra do just fine with everything, others can't be kept with anything too fast, others can get slightly aggressive. Please contact us to discuss your unique setup before deciding on a fish.
