Who doesn't recognize Dory? Dory is a type of fish known as a tang. Despite their portrayal in movies, tangs have fairly aggressive personalities and need to be handled with care when being introduced to a tank or when new neighbors are introduced afterwards. Generally, it is best for a tang to be the last thing added to an aquarium. When that's not possible, we have methods to make new additions go more smoothly.
Tangs are generally peaceful after settling into a tank and accepting their neighbors. This makes them a great addition to community tanks. However, tangs can also live quite well in predator tanks due to their size and hidden weapons.
Tank Sizes: Most tangs get quite large. This cannot be understated. However, this takes many, many years and we do have tanks that can accommodate them as they reach adulthood. While we prefer for our animals to go into homes that can sustain them for their whole lives, we will make a few exceptions for certain tangs. We have listed the minimum tank sizes for adult fish, but they can live in smaller tanks for many years before needing to be moved into a larger one. As always, please discuss your options with us.
Compatibility: Tangs are very particular about living with each other. Because this depends so much on each fish and their personality, there is no easy rule to housing tangs together. Please speak with us if you are hoping to house multiple tangs.
