While there are a few small barbs, most are medium-sized or even large fish. Most have more subtle colors and are prized for their tight schooling behaviors. These are very active fish that prefer large groups, and so need larger tanks than expected for their size.
In general, barbs are slightly more aggressive than most small fish and are better suited for semi-aggressive or even aggressive tanks with similarly sized fish. If you are looking for more peaceful schooling fish, please check out our Tetra page.
Selection: There are many more barbs in the trade than we have listed here. If you do not see a species you are interested in, do not fret! It is very likely that we can order and care for them, so feel free to reach out.
Schooling*: Like tetra, barbs are a schooling fish and need to be kept in groups. A group of eight individuals is recommended, but we prefer to keep at least twelve to minimize stress and aggression.
