Cichlids

There are easily hundreds, if not thousands, of types of cichlid, with personalities ranging from bashful to downright nasty. We mainly keep the aggressive variety. Our cichlids are not suitable for community tanks and should not be housed with anything but other cichlids. These are large and very active fish. Cichlid tanks should be no smaller than 55 gallons for assorted African cichlids, and larger for everything else. Even with these minimums, bigger is always better.

African cichlids are our first choice for when you want large and colorful fish. They are not shy and will spend nearly every waking moment looking for food and chasing each other.

There are two very broad categories of cichlid: African and South/Central American. There are careful rules for each category that are too complex to go into here. If you are interested in keeping a very particular tank, please contact us to discuss your options.
