Blennies and gobies look and act very similar, but tend to stick to different parts of the tank. In general, blennies are very peaceful and keep to themselves, with some being mildly territorial. Most of these fish have very peculiar faces and are quite easy to fall in love with for all their strange little habits.
Most blennies can be divided into two categories: algae-blennies and rock-dwellers. In theory, it is possible to have one of each category. However, because of the individual nature of each species, this is not guaranteed and further discussion is highly recommended. Depending on the nature of each species, they also may or may not be compatible with certain gobies.
Algae Blennies: Despite their names, we do not find algae blennies to be good at controlling algae. Typically, they prefer meatier foods such as brine shrimp or mysis. However, it is important to offer them seaweed on occasion to ensure a balanced diet. This is easily done using a magnetic clip that we provide.
Rock-Dwelling Blennies: After settling in, rock blennies will claim a hole in the rock for themselves. They are very protective of their hole and will protect the inch or two around it fiercely. Some will leave their hole for long stretches of the day, while others will rarely leave it at all. It's never hard to figure out where they are, since they typically stay in the same area at all times.
Midas Blenny
Rock-Dwelling Blenny
Minimum Tank Size:
The Midas blenny comes in both gold and black varieties, though we generally keep the gold variety for their bright color. They are very active once settled and will often sit high in the water to watch what is going on around them. Occasionally, they return to their hole and bob their heads as they watch the world outside.
Tailspot Blenny
Rock-Dwelling Blenny
Minimum Tank Size:
Tailspot blennies are nosy homebodies with a perpetually shocked and judgemental face. They will occasionally leave their hole to swim a circle around their rock, but will otherwise stay within the same few inches of the tank for most of their life. Tailspots may claim a new hole as better real estate becomes available, but won't do so often.
Bicolor Blenny
Rock-Dwelling Blenny
Minimum Tank Size:
Bicolor blennies are known for their bright orange tails, tails that you won’t see very often. They very rarely leave their hole except to chase intruders away. However, they are playful with humans and will swim tight circles in front of their hole when they see an audience, typically as a way of begging for food or yelling "Get off my lawn!"
Lawnmower Blenny
Algae Blenny
Minimum Tank Size:
A smaller and easily overlooked fish, Lawnmowers are masters of hide-and-seek. They are very peaceful and will usually hop around on the rocks to look for leftovers. They are popular for their perpetually angry (and lovably ugly) faces, and the fun of trying to find them against the rocks.
Starry Blenny
Algae Blenny
Minimum Tank Size:
Starry blennies are a larger and even more angry-looking version of the lawnmower blenny. Despite their angry eyebrows, they are very relaxed and will spend the days sitting on their rock and picking at the glass. Their larger size makes them more visible, and better suited for larger tanks.
