Basslets are a common addition to most aquariums, particularly the Royal Gramma. They are generally mild tempered and can get along with most other nonaggressive species. Most are brightly colored with distinct patterns and very similar behaviors, though some are more reclusive than others.
While they can sometimes become territorial, they will rarely do more than chase a fish away. Otherwise, they will spend most of their day swimming through the rocks. They can be a little shy in high-traffic areas, but will be more visible as they become comfortable in their new home, and especially with familiar faces.
Compatibility with other basslets varies between species, though it is best to assume they cannot be housed together except in particularly large aquaria. Some of these species can be kept in groups, but only in very large tanks (100+ gallons).
Royal Gramma
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
The Royal Gramma is the most popular of the basslets, for obvious reasons. These guys keep their bright colors as they grow and have a tendency to rest upside-down under rocks.

Blackcap Basslet
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Blackcaps live naturally in deeper, darker waters. In the aquarium, they are generally mild and keep to themselves, hiding in caves and peering out at the world around them. Even so, their stunning coloration is hard to miss.
Chalk Basslet
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Just like their cousins, Chalk Bass can be a little reclusive. Even so, they are fascinating to watch move between the rocks. They become more social as they become comfortable and are a good fit for most aquariums without small shrimp.
McNeil's Assessor
Note! Average Price: $120+
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
These are the show dogs of the fish world. While not difficult to care for, McNeil's Assessors are highly sought-after for their rarity. They have very mild personalities that range between shy and semi-social, spending the day near their chosen rock, sometimes upside down like shown here.
Tobacco Basslet
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
The largest basslet we keep, Tobacco Bass are better suited for semi-aggressive or even aggressive tanks with fish of similar size. Their streamlined bodies make them fast predators, and they should not be kept with small shrimps or fish. Otherwise, they are moderately peaceful and can get along with any fish that don't look tasty.
